UTEP Cross Country Concludes Regular Season at Texas A&M’s Arturo Barrios Invitational Friday Morning

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UTEP cross country team wrapped regular-season action as eight Miners turned in personal bests at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational on Friday morning at the Dale Watts '71 Cross Country Course.
 
On the men's side, Andrés Gurrola clocked in a personal-best 24:09.1 in the 8k, finishing as the top Miner and 51st overall out of 323 competitors. Paul Rotich was 68th with a personal-best time of 24:18.3. Carmelo Corral placed 134th with a personal-best 24:57.7. Israel Quintana clocked in a personal-best 25:24.7. At the same time, Nethaneel Taylor also set a career standard with a time of 25:26.6. Juan Leal also turned in a PB time of 25:56.5. Aron Tanui (26:50.6) and Malin Arnoldussen (28:48.8) rounded out the order of finish for the Miners. 
 
"Fantastic run today by our men. Three men clocked in under 25 minutes, led by senior Andrés Gurrola. Israel Quintana and Nethaneel Taylor stepped up huge with big races when we needed them as well," UTEP distance coach Justin Herbert said. "We had great runs from Vallary [Kiplagat] and Salma [Licon] today. Vallary ran a season best and Salma's 22:35 is a huge lifetime best and her first time under 23 minutes."
 
Vallary Kiplagat ran a season-best time of 22:11.4 to finish as the top Miner in the women's 6k event. Kiplagat was 133rd of 311 runners. Salma Licon posted a personal-best 22:35.3, and Isabella Campa also turned in a PB with a time of 25:33.9. Peace Ewa made her cross country debut, clocking in a 26:11.3.
 
Overall, the UTEP men's team placed 18th out of 32 teams, scoring 483 points. Host Texas A&M won the men's 8k with 51 points. The UTEP women were 34th of 37 programs. Wake Forest won the women's 6k with 78 points. 
 
Individually, Texas Tech's Titus Kimaru won the men's 8k with a time of 22:36.1. Texas A&M-CC's Elizabeth Khatevi clocked in at 18:56.0 to claim the women's title.

UTEP will travel to Huntsville, Ala., to compete at the 2025 Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 1.
