PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jennifer Abbruzzese (Jr./League City, Texas) recorded her 32nd career double-double Saturday to set a new school record, but it was not enough as Portland State topped the Miners, 30-23, 30-13, 30-28, in the Nike Pilot Preview at the Chiles Center.
"We are struggling to find ourselves," said Scott Swanson. "I think it is a case where we are lacking confidence right now. We have the talent, but are not putting everything together to be successful."
Abbruzzese finished the match with 14 kills and 10 digs to give the junior 32 double-doubles for her career, surpassing the mark of 31 set by Nat Nevarrez from 1988-91. Abbruzzese also extended her streak of double-doubles to 21 consecutive matches, dating back to Sept. 8, 2001.
Ana Beatriz Fontes (So./Florianpolis, Brazil) added 12 kills and nine digs in the loss, while libero Brittanie Portillo (So./El Paso, Texas) added her second straight double-digit dig performance with 10 against the Vikings.
Portland State (2-0) was led by Richell Wilson's 18 kills, six digs and three blocks.
UTEP (0-2) closes out play tonight at the Nike Pilot Preview with a 6:30 p.m. (MDT) match against Louisiana-Monroe.
