Quick Turnaround For UTEP Men

The UTEP men's basketball team will play its second game in three nights to open the 2004-05 season on Tuesday. The Miners will tangle with Jackson State at 7:35 p.m. in game two of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational.

UTEP (1-0) blasted Delaware State 83-50 in opening round action of the tournament on Sunday. Five players scored in double figures for the Miners, who shot 62.5 percent while limiting the Hornets to 34 percent accuracy. UTEP buried Delaware State with a 17-0 first half run to take a 31-15 lead.

Jackson State is 0-2 on the season with losses at Maryland (93-57) and Arizona State (79-48). The Tigers are averaging just 52.5 points per game while shooting 31 percent from the floor and 25 percent from beyond the arc. Jackson State has also been outrebounded 65-45 by its first two opponents.

The Tigers were 12-17 last season, including 9-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Three starters and seven letterwinners return. Through two games, senior guard Antonio Williams-Parker is averaging 10 points and junior guard Dakari Wallace is averaging 9.5 points.

Parker was 3-4 from the field and 3-4 from the line in the loss at Arizona State on Sunday. The Sun Devils opened up a 39-23 halftime lead and the Tigers shot 26.7 percent on the evening.

UTEP and Jackson State have met four times previously, most recently during the 2000-01 season. The Miners have won all four matchups by an average of 22 points.

The men will play two games in Las Vegas this weekend, starting on Friday versus Arizona State at 8:30 p.m. MST. The game will be televised in El Paso on Time Warner Cable Channel 7. Saturday's opponent and game time are to be determined.

The UTEP women (1-0) will host I-10 rival New Mexico State (0-1) at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Miner men.

Purchase of a ticket to the men's game will be good for admittance to the women's game. Purchase of a ticket to the women's game will be good for admittance to the men's game, provided the fan arrive at the Haskins Center prior to halftime of the women's game. Fans who purchase a ticket to the women's game will be moved to a reserved seating location for the men's game.

Additionally, men's basketball season ticket holders will be granted admission to the women's game.

On Tuesday, tickets to the women's contest will be sold until halftime of the first game. Tickets to the men's game will be sold thereafter.
