LUBBOCK, Texas Danielle King and Vicky Michaud advanced to the semifinal and final round of their respective flights on the first day of the Scarborough Specialties Open in Lubbock, Texas, Friday.
King defeated Texas State’s Jana Cucciniello, 6-0, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of Flight B after receiving a bye in the round of 16.
After a grueling 3-6, 7-6, (10-3), win over Texas-San Antonio’s Ana Paula Soto in the first round of Flight D, Michaud made quick work of Air Force’s Kelly Morgan, 6-2, 7-5, to earn a spot in the finals of the eight-person bracket.
Michaud also won her only doubles match of the day. She and teammate Teri Wilkerson cruised to an 8-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the Black Flight.
Megan Pritchard also claimed a doubles win, as she and UTSA’s Megan Harless matched skills to defeat Cucciniello and Leja Sirola of Texas State, 8-6, in the Red Flight.
As a whole, UTEP coach Jamie Campbell was pleased with how her team fared throughout the day.
“Every single player has improved immensely since the last tournament and we are just looking to improve each day out here,” Campbell said.
Wilkerson and Sandra Spirta also collected one singles win on the day.
Play will continue throughout the weekend with action getting underway at 8:30 a.m. Mountain time on Saturday and Sunday.
