The second-ranked UTEP track and field team picked up four awards by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday.
The Miners swept the men’s field in the Mountain Region, winning the Coach of the Year, the Track Athlete of the Year and the Field Athlete of the Year.
Head coach
Bob Kitchens, who was named the Mountain Region’s Indoor Coach of the Year, has UTEP ranked second nationally in both the coaches and Trackwire.com polls. His Miners won the outdoor Conference USA title and he will have nine male student-athletes entered in 11 events and one relay at the NCAA Championships.
Freshman
Churandy Martina has been one of the nation’s most electric sprinters this season. He took home the 100-meter and 200-meter dash titles at the C-USA Championship and NCAA Midwest Regional. Martina won the C-USA 100 by running a wind-aided 9.76, matching the second-fastest time run under any condition.
Junior
Mickael Hanany collected his second honor by the USTFCCCA this year after gaining indoor recognition in March. Hanany will be one of the favorites in the high jump at the NCAA Championships and he is also entered in the long jump. He was the C-USA High Point Award winner and had the Performance of the Meet by winning the long jump, triple jump and high jump golds at the conference championships.
Freshman
Oludamola Osayomi was named the Mountain Region’s Female Track Athlete of the Year. Osayomi was the C-USA runner-up in the 100 and 200. She is also headed to Sacramento, Calif., in both events.
