Spurred on by hot shooting and stifling defense, the UTEP women's basketball team rolled to a 75-58 win against Savannah State at the Don Haskins Center Sunday afternoon.
It was definitely a good win," head coach Keitha Adams said. "We got a chance to play everyone and got up and down the court."
The Miners improve to 6-2 on the campaign, including 4-0 at home, while the Tigers fall to 4-4. UTEP was dominant in all facets of the game, connecting on 45.2 percent of their chances while forcing SSU into a dismal 35.5 percent from the floor.
The Orange and Blue controlled the boards to the tune of 47-34, including a season-high 18 offensive boards. UTEP is now 6-0 on the season when out-rebounding its opponent.
UTEP's bench also provided a boost, pouring in 32 points. To put that feat into perspective, consider that the Miners' reserve had accounted for 33 points combined the past three games.
The Miners displayed an unselfish attitude at the offensive end of the court, accounting for a campaign-best 20 assists.
Kasia Krezel, Natasha Lacy led the way offensively, with respective point totals of 15, 11 and 10. Lacy also dished out eight assists and had five steals to flirt with a triple-double. Claudia Porras and Timika Williams handled the rebounding with 10 boards apiece while Jareica Hughes fought through an illness to provide four points and five assists in 15 minutes of action.
Savannah State actually kept things close early on, as they trailed just by four (18-14) halfway through the opening period. The Miners simply had too much firepower, though, as they methodically began to pull away.
Sviatlana Truskshanina drained a long three with 5:49 left in the half to afford the Orange and Blue their first double-digit edge. A runner in the lane by Tasha Marisett, who finished with five points and four boards, made it a 15-point UTEP lead with a little less than three minutes remaining in the stanza.
The Tigers tried to close the deficit, but UTEP would not let them as it closed the period by connecting of 14-of-21 from the floor in the final minutes.
The Miners came out on fire in the second half, out-scoring Savannah State 11-3 in the first couple of minutes to essentially put things away. The Tigers continued to battle, but UTEP did not allow them to get any closer than 15.
UTEP will be back in action against 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Prairie View A&M at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday at the Don Haskins Center.
