EL PASO - Volleyball head coach
Ken Murphy announced the addition of
Azadeh Boroumand to the UTEP volleyball coaching staff on Tuesday.
"Azadeh brings experience as an outstanding student-athlete and a tough competitor," Murphy said. "I recruited her out of high school and coached against her. The enthusiasm she displays on and off the court is unparalleled.
"I know Azadeh will bring all of these great qualities to our gym and I'm looking forward to seeing the impact she will have on our program."
Boroumand comes to UTEP after completing her eligibility as a four-year letterwinner at the University of Pittsburgh (2003-06) where she helped the Panthers notch two consecutive NCAA appearances in 2003 and 2004.
A setter from Red Deer, Alberta, Boroumand garnered First Team All-BIG EAST Conference honors and was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northeast Region Honorable Mention as a senior in 2006. In her final campaign at Pittsburgh, she was a BIG EAST Player of the Week and tabbed to the league's weekly honor roll twice.
Boroumand's 1,336 assists in 2004 were the most by any Panthers' sophomore in school history. She finished the season with 12.6 assists per game to rank first among all BIG EAST Conference players and 47th nationally.
For her efforts off the court, Boroumand received Pittsburgh's Athletic Senior of Distinction Award and the Panther Gold Academic Award. She was also named a BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Star while contributing to the Top Women's Team GPA Award as a senior. Boroumand graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in French on December 2007.
In addition, she was tabbed the 2006 Magnolia Invitational MVP and picked up Pittsburgh Volleyball's Leadership Award (2006) amongst her many other accolades.
The Canada native appeared in 285 games while recording 3,200 assists (11.23/game) and contributing 278 kills (.314) in a Panthers' uniform.
Boroumand's coaching responsibilities will include working directly with the setters while also spearheading community outreach programs. She will assist with recruiting as well as leading camps and clinics throughout the year.
