EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP women's tennis team battled, but lost a hard-fought match to Big10 program Wisconsin, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the El Paso Tennis & Swim Club.
The Miners (4-2) got off to a good start, as Davina Meza and Dude Santos took down Kelsey Grambeau and Lauren Burich, 8-2, on the no. 1 doubles court. But the Badgers (5-2) took the next two matches to claim the early advantage, 1-0. Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova slipped by Daphne Visscher and Lois Wagenvoort, 8-6, while Matilda Tench and Jeannez Daniel came up short, losing 8-5 to Lauren Chypyha and Maria Avgerinos. Tench and Daniel found themselves down, 6-1, at one point and rallied to make it interesting, but Wisconsin was too much for the duo.
Santos, on the no. 3 singles court, tied the match at 1-1 when the sophomore cruised past Rider, 6-1, 6-0. Grambeau defeated Tench, 6-2, 6-1, on the no. 5 court, while Visscher fell, 6-1, 6-1, to Stepanova at no. 6, giving Wisconsin a 3-1 advantage.
The Badgers wrapped up the match when Burich beat Wagenvoort, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 at the no. 4 position. Daniel won her match, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, on the no. 2 court.
UTEP will return to action on Feb. 28, when it hosts UTPB at noon. The Miners will wrap up the weekend against Conference USA foe, UTSA on March 1. Sunday's match versus the Roadrunners is "Davina Day", as the senior captain will be honored prior to the noon match.
