UTEP Women’s Golf to Close Out Fall Slate in Arkansas

The UTEP women's golf team will play in its fifth and final tournament of the fall season starting Sunday.  The Miners will take part in the Little Rock Classic Oct. 29-31 at Diamante Golf Club in Hot Springs Village, Ark.

Eighteen holes will be contested each day, with the Miners joining Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Jacksonville State, Little Rock, Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Utah Valley, UT Arlington and UTRGV in the tournament field.

UTEP is rated no. 125 in the latest Golfstat rankings.  That would rank the Miners second in the field going in behind no. 120 Central Arkansas, although Arkansas State, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State and Utah Valley are all listed in the top-150.

"It's going to be a good, competitive tournament," UTEP coach Jere Pelletier said.  "It's a full field.  Hopefully we can finish in the top-five and keep our good fall season going.  The weather is going to be a little cold, but I think the girls will handle it fine.  I'm excited to see how they're going to play."

The Miners are shooting for their fifth top-five finish of the season.  They took second at the NM State Aggie Invitational (Las Cruces), third at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial (Springfield, Mo.) and the FAU Fall Invitational (Boca Raton, Fla.), and fifth at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout (Tulsa, Okla.).

Junior Lily Downs, who was named Conference USA Golfer of the Week on Oct. 18, leads the Miners with a 73.4 scoring average.  Senior June Ting is second in line with a 74.8 scoring average.  Both own a pair of top-10 finishes this fall.

Joining Downs and Ting in Arkansas will be sophomore Abbie Anghelescu, and freshmen Valeria Mendizabal and Shannon O'Dwyer.

The Diamante Golf Club features a par-72, 6,076-yard course.
