UTEP Track And Field Heads to Texas Relays

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP track and field team will be competing at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Presented by The Home Depot to compete in the four-day competition starting on Wednesday with the multi-events.

Getting the action started for the Miners will be senior Lucia Mokrasova in the heptathlon. Mokrasova has found success at the Mike A. Myers Stadium over her career. During the 2017 season, she set the school record in the heptathlon by scoring 5,671 points to finish eighth overall.

The senior will compete in four events on Wednesday starting with the 100m hurdles at 9:30 a.m. MT, followed by the high jump, shot put and 200m. She will close out the heptathlon returning to the field on Thursday morning, with the javelin at 10 a.m., followed by the long jump and 800m.

Sophomore sensation Michael Saruni will compete in the men's 800m invitational, which will include collegiate and professional runners. Saruni will take the track on Thursday at 6 p.m. Last year, the Kenya native set the meet record with a time of 1:45.82. Saruni will also take part in the men's 4x400m relay on Saturday, starting at 3:05 p.m.

After missing the 2017 season, senior Rasmus Maukonen will compete in the javelin on Thursday beginning at 1:15 p.m. Maukonen garnered a 2015 NCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors when he finished 20th overall in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. At the 2015 Texas Relays, the Finland native launched the javelin 70.12m (230-1) to finish fifth overall.

Competing in the mile will be Jonah Koech. The junior clocked a personal best in the mile at the 2016 Texas Relays posting a time of 4:00.82.

Lilian Koech will see action in the 800m on Thursday starting at 6 p.m. She will return to the track on Saturday for the 1,500m at 2:35 p.m.

Making their first appearance at the Texas Relays will be newcomers Shakeem Smith (100m hurdles), David Rivera (100m hurdles), Frederic Williams (100m), Kyle Farrell (100m), Cornelius Kapel (1,500m) and Etamar Bhastaekar (pole vault).

This year's meet will be streamed on ESPN3 and via the ESPN app. The Longhorn Network will also be providing coverage of the meet.
