El Paso native and UTEP alum Daniel Veale is coming back to the Sun City to serve as the Miners' Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing. His appointment was announced on Wednesday.
Veale, who spent seven years as a member of the Miners' athletic staff from 2009-16, will start his second tour of duty at UTEP on July 1.
"During the interview process, Daniel stood out for his expertise, energy, and passion for UTEP Athletics and the Sun City," UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter said. "He played a vital role in our Development and Marketing areas during his first time here, and has broadened his experience working for the Kraddick Foundation and SMU Athletics in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. As we build an athletic program that consistently competes for and wins championships, Daniel's efforts will be crucial in driving attendance and enhancing the overall game day experience for all Miner fans."
"I could not be more excited and honored to come back home to El Paso," Veale said. "It's a great time to be a Miner and I'm ready to hit the ground running!"
Veale worked at SMU as Director of Marketing since September, 2017 with oversight of the promotional efforts for the football, men's basketball, swimming and diving, rowing, men's and women's soccer and equestrian sports programs. He helped enhance the gameday atmosphere at Gerald J. Ford Stadium and Moody Coliseum in collaboration with the Director of Gameday by bringing new elements such as fan-friendly video board features, an in-venue DJ and live emcee, student engagement through The Mob, theme nights, and increased involvement of the spirit teams. Veale managed SMU Athletics' Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, using analytical data to increase the Mustangs' social media presence. He also managed the department's advertising efforts through television, radio and print media, billboards and other unique mediums such as airports and public transportation.
Veale worked in tandem with multimedia rights holder Learfield, IMG Learfield Ticketing and the Mustang Club to bolster interest, excitement and revenue for SMU Athletics. The fulfillment of that mission included the enhancement of the overall student experience, as Veale served as the department's liaison to campus and successfully collaborated on events such as SMU Stampede Move In, Welcome Back Week, Homecoming, New Student Orientation and other activations. Veale also co-founded the Dallas Community Outreach Committee, providing direct exposure to parts of DFW that were not previously connected with SMU.
Prior to his time on the Hilltop, Veale served as Director of Development for the Kraddick Foundation in Dallas for one year (2016-17). He implemented and managed the annual major gifts campaign and development activities with a large base of volunteer campaigners, raising over $700,000 in cash and gift-in-kind. These funds helped send over 60 life-altered and life-threatened children and their families to Disney World on an all-expense paid trip.
In his first UTEP incarnation, Veale spent one year (2011-12) as Assistant Director of Athletic Development before branching into the Marketing and Promotions department, where he worked his way up to Director of Marketing and Promotions. His tenure as a member of the Miners' Marketing and Promotions team including assisting with the 2011 and 2014 Conference USA Basketball Championships in El Paso, as well as the women's basketball team's run to the WNIT finals which included their first-ever sellout crowd in the Don Haskins Center. Veale was also a part of the promotional efforts for the historic 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Texas Western Men's Basketball National Championship Team in 2016. He implemented marketing plans for all 16 Miner sports teams and various initiatives designed to enhance the fans' game day experience. He was the lead coordinator on the UTEP football season ticket campaign, producing brochures and email blasts while installing the 30 Prizes in 30 Days program. Veale served on numerous university campus boards including the UTEP Centennial Celebration, the 1966 50th Anniversary, Minerpalooza, Student Government Organization, Student Engagement and Learning Center, Homecoming Committee and the Campus Transformation Project.
A 2009 graduate of SMU with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Corporate Communications, Veale added a Masters of Business Administration with a Management Concentration from UTEP in 2011. He was named one of El Paso's Top 30 Professionals Under 30 during his first stint with the Miners, when he served as a liaison to the City and County as well as the Fort Bliss Army Base.
