EL PASO – The UTEP track and field team will compete in its second indoor meet Jan. 24-25 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. There will be a total of 36 events throughout the two days, and 41 UTEP student-athletes competing, beginning at 4 p.m. MT on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
The Miners will compete against host New Mexico and I-10 rival NM State, while some top programs in Texas, LSU and Southern California will take the track and field. Mountain West schools San Jose State, San Diego State and Air Force will also be in attendance. Other notable schools making trip are Grand Canyon, CSU-Pueblo, Azusa Pacific and Eastern New Mexico.
 
The LSU Tigers enter ranked second in the men's preseason poll with USC right behind them in third and Texas in fourth. The USC women rank first in the preseason poll with Texas fourth and LSU 16th, while the UNM women enter the season sixth. 
 
Last week, the Miners opened the indoor season with success, breaking a UTEP program record and seeing a trio of first-place finishes at the Texas Tech Corky Classic Jan. 17-18 at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock.
 
Shakeem Smith broke a 20-year old program record by recording a 7.90 in the 60m hurdles. Rodgers Korir took first in the men's 5000m, while Carolyn Chepkosgei finished first in the women's 800m, and Titus Cheruiyot captured first in the men's 3000m. Korir and Boaz Ronoh finished second and third in the 3000m, respectively. Chantoba Bright finished in second place in the women's triple jump. Sean Bailey raced out to a second-place finish in the men's 600y, while Madison Gibson took third in women's 200m.
