UTEP Athletics to Celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

EL PASO, TEXAS – The UTEP Athletic Department is gearing up for its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration beginning Saturday, Feb. 1 and culminating with its annual banquet on Feb. 8.

This year's festivities include free admission to the UTEP rifle (Jan. 31; Feb. 2) and tennis (Feb. 1-2) matches, while the department will also celebrate the annual event on Feb. 8 when UTEP women's basketball hosts Old Dominion at the Don Haskins Center with tickets starting as low as $3.

The 2020 schedule of events includes a lunch held at the El Paso Tennis Club at 12 p.m. on Feb. 1 when UTEP tennis hosts Abilene Christian. The following day, brunch will be served at 10 a.m. at the UTEP rifle range during the Miners' home match versus Jacksonville State. Both events are open to the public.

Additionally, the El Paso Girls and Women in Sports Day Committee will honor three female athletes in the community who represent Flo Hyman's outstanding achievements and commitment to excellence.

A Flo Hyman Award winner will be selected from each of the following grade levels: elementary, middle and high school. Each Flo Hyman Award winner and their distinguished guests will be recognized at a VIP banquet held in the Hall of Champions in the Larry K. Durham Center (located on the UTEP campus) at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8. This year's award recipients will also be recognized during halftime at the UTEP women's basketball game at 1 p.m. that same day.

Hyman was captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team and led her team to a silver medal, which led to the sport of women's volleyball to gain worldwide recognition and respect. Hyman was also a dedicated advocate for equality in women's sports during her career. She tragically died from Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, while playing in Japan in 1986.
