UTEP Track & Field to Compete at the Conference USA Championships Feb. 22-23


EL PASO – The 2020 Conference USA Indoor Championships are set to begin Saturday, Feb. 22, hosted by UAB at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala. The UTEP women's squad is the defending C-USA champions, while the men's side is looking for its first since 2014.
 
The Miners have experienced a slew of success leading up to the championships. On the men's side, Sean Bailey has captured a pair of first-place finishes in the 400m, while Titus Cheruiyot has won all three 3000m events competed in this season. Karol Koncos most recently won the weight throw at the Don Kirby Elite with a personal best toss of 20.56m. Koncos was named the C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week this past week. Shakeem Smith set the program record with a 7.89 in the 60m hurdles at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. 
 
On the women's side, Chantoba Bright was named the C-USA Female Field Athlete of the Week in back-to-back weeks, placing first in the triple jump at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic and following with a personal-best 13.28m leap at the Don Kirby Elite. Carolyn Chepkosgei won the 800m at the Texas Tech Corky Classic, while finishing in the second place in the mile (New Mexico Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational) and in the 1000m (Texas Tech Corky Classic). Chepkosgei was recently named the C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Week after finishing with the top time in conference at the Iowa State Classic in the 800m (2:07.16).

The action begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with combined events, starting with the heptathlon. The pentathlon follows at 9:15 a.m. CT. The first set of field events will start at 2 p.m. CT, commencing with the men's high jump. Running prelims begin at 4 p.m. CT with the mile. The finals of the 5000m and DMR kick off at 7 p.m. CT and 8:20 p.m. CT, respectively.
 
The remaining heptathlon events begin Sunday at 9 a.m. CT. The second round of field events starts at 11 a.m. with men's shot put and triple jump and the women's high jump. The remainder of the running finals begin at 1 p.m. with ESPN+ coverage commencing at 2 p.m. CT. The awards presentation is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. following the conclusion of all running finals.
