Miners Close Out a Rainy Day 1 at GCU Invite


PHOENIX, Arizona – The UTEP Women's Golf team wrapped up a rainy first day at the 2020 GCU Invite on Saturday with the Miners finishing the opening round in 10th place as a team.
 
The Miners were slated to play 36 holes on Saturday, but tournament officials were forced to reduce the event to just two rounds due to inclement weather in the Phoenix area. UTEP will play the second and final round of golf beginning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.
 
About an hour into the first round on Saturday, play was suspended due to heavy rainfall at the GCU Championship Golf Course, but the weather began to cooperate two hours later when play resumed.
 
UTEP finished the first day by shooting 304 (+16) as a team, while Grand Canyon finished the day at 1-under to top the leaderboard halfway through the tournament.
 
Individually, the Miners were led by Valeria Mendizabal, who shot 73 (+1) in the opening round to end the day tied for 13th. Taylor Stone shot 4-over 76 on the day to tie for 31st, while Audrey Haddad was right behind her with a score of 77 (+5) on Saturday.
 
UTEP's Sophie Delfosse finished the first round at 6-over with a score of 78, while Abbie Anghelescu shot 79 (+7) on Saturday in Phoenix. Crystal Wu is also competing as an individual at this weekend's event and closed out the day at 7-over with a score of 79 in the first round.
 
UTEP will tee off on the second and final round beginning at 8 a.m. MT on Sunday morning, while the Miners will be paired with Southern Utah, UC Riverside and Montana State in the last round.
