GECU PRESENTS: Titus Cheruiyot Strives for Success on and off the Track


UTEP sophomore Titus Cheruiyot produced a stellar freshman campaign. 
 
Cheruiyot's success started during the 2019 cross country season where the product of Kenya was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Meet at the 2019 C-USA Cross Country Championships, while earning All-CUSA First Team honors.
 
He opened his collegiate career with a victory at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, and claimed gold at the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
 
Cheruiyot followed his cross-country success by being named the 2020 Conference USA Track and Field Indoor Championships Male Freshman of the Meet in Birmingham, Ala. The distance runner was named All-C-USA Second Team in the 5000-meter and Third Team in the 3000-meter. 
 
He won gold in a trio of 3000-meter events during the regular season. He crossed the finish line first at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in Lubbock, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and New Mexico Collegiate Classic. 
 
Miner fans can expect Titus to stay on the right track and keep striving forward with the Orange and Blue!
 
Get to know Titus a little more with this Q&A…
 
At what age did you begin running cross country and track?
"Actually, I began cross country while in high school – about 16 years old."
 
Why did you start competing in cross country and track?
"I began competing the same event and track for my high school just for fun and just to score for my school. I never knew I had talent in it but was doing it for fun."
 
Who was your favorite track athlete growing up?
"I grew up not having any mentor or role model to lure me into athletics but my dad used to tell me his stories about how he used to compete and was well known for his strength in track."
 
What is your favorite event to run?
"My best event is the 3000m and steeplechase."
 
What was your most memorable moment in your first season as a Miner?
"My memorable moment of my first season as a miner is my encounter at the cross country regional meeting last year where I was stepped on and fell twice during the race, but all the same I made to the nationals."
 
Did you play any other sports growing up?
"I used to play rugby sevens in my high school. It was more running, so it fitted me."
 
What is your favorite rugby team?
"The Kenyan rugby team, of course."


What is your favorite sport to watch besides track and field?
"I like watching football."
 
What is your favorite music and musical artist to listen to?
" I like pop music and country music."
 
What is your ultimate goal at UTEP?
"My ultimate goal at UTEP is academic success (acquire my degree and masters as an engineer)."
 
What is your major? And what do you want to do after college?
"My major is Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. After college I want to work and serve my society at the capacity that I will have achieved."
