C-USA Announces UTEP Football’s Rey Flores as a Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient

DALLAS – UTEP football senior and Sun City product Rey Flores was honored as one of 14 accomplished recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship as announced by Conference USA officials on Thursday.

This year marks the 14th year the award has been named after Dr. Jim Castañeda, who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed in 2008. Every season, C-USA grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates selected by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Conference USA Board of Directors.

Flores, a graduate of Ysleta High School, is a four-year letterwinner with the UTEP football team. He graduated in May 2021 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an undergraduate GPA of 3.90. Currently boasting a graduate degree of 4.0 in UTEP's M.S. of Mechanical Engineering, Flores was a four-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and Academic Medal selection. Having joined the football team as a walk-on, Flores worked his way to an athletic scholarship and has been a leader for his teammates. He's volunteered in the Unmanned Aerial Systems program while helping one of his professor's in large-scale university projects.

The senior is listed as a running back/wide receiver heading into the 2022 campaign. Last season, Flores competed in 12 games with a pair of starts. He tallied 204 yards on 13 receptions (15.7 avg.), ranking fourth on the team in receiving yards, and added 130 yards on 32 attempts on the ground. Flores scored on a two-point conversion at UAB, while adding a career-long reception 53 yards against Fresno State at the New Mexico Bowl. Flores's efforts helped surge the Miners to a winning season (7-6) and a bowl appearance for the first time in seven years.
