NEW ORLEANS, La. - UTEP Volleyball fell 3-2 to Clemson Saturday afternoon at the Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse to close out the Tulane Invitational. The Miners picked up the first two sets before the Tigers rallied back to reverse-sweep the remainder (25-14, 25-23, 19-25, 13-25, 7-15).
Alianza Darley led the Miners with 12 kills and four blocks. Mattie Gantt posted 25 assists and an ace while Alyssa Sianez recorded 10 digs and an ace.
UTEP put up 11 blocks to Clemson's nine, but the Tigers out hit the Miners in kills and aces.
SET ONE | UTEP came out with an early lead, and a would-be Clemson ace brought the Tigers within one, but UTEP's Coach Wallis challenged the call and reversed the score to bring the Miners up 9-6. UTEP had two 4-0 runs to pull away with the set win, 25-14.
SET TWO | Clemson opened with the 4-1 lead. UTEP came within two, 7-9, and was forced to sidebar as the Tigers led 12-7. Coming out of the break, UTEP drove in a 4-0 run to close 11-12. The Miners tied the set 14-14 off two Ali Darley and Kaya Weaver blocks. UTEP dealt five unanswered to tie the set and take the 20-19 lead on a Sakira LaCour kill pushing the Tigers to call a timeout. Both teams went 1-for-1 approaching UTEP set point and the Miners held on to take the 2-0 advantage with the 25-23 set win.
SET THREE | As Clemson led 4-2, UTEP came around to tie the set at 8-8, but the Tigers lucked out as they pulled ahead off UTEP errors. The Miners closed the deficit 12-13 off a kill by Alianza Darley. Clemson inched its way to capture its first set of the match taking the 25-15 win.
SET FOUR | The Tigers had multiple bursts starting off with a 5-0 run to pull ahead 6-3 early in the set. The Miners put down nine kills before the Tigers locked in the 25-13 set win to knot the match and force a fifth set.
SET FIVE | Clemson finished off the reverse sweep on a 6-0 run to close out the set 15-7.
