UTEP Miners

National Girls and Women in Sports Day

NGWSD

UTEP Athletics is again celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day beginning in February. During this celebration, the El Paso National Girls and Women in Sports Day committee will be honoring three deserving young ladies with a local Flo Hyman Award for their contributions to academics, athletics, and leadership within the El Paso community.  Please take the time to nominate a young lady from your school that exemplifies high academic excellence, athletics, and leadership from your campus. One Flo Hyman Award winner will be selected from each of the following: elementary, middle, and high school grade-level.

The Flo Hyman Memorial Award will be  presented in February in conjunction with National Girls and Women in Sports Day to three outstanding female athletes, who exemplify Flo Hyman’s dignity, spirit, and commitment to excellence.  Hyman was captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team and led her team to a silver medal, thus bringing U.S. women’s volleyball worldwide recognition and respect. Hyman was also a dedicated advocate of promoting equality for women’s sports. She tragically died suddenly from Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, while playing in Japan in 1986.

Each Flo Hyman Award winner and their distinguished guests will be recognized at a VIP banquet held in the Jonathan Rogers Hall of Champions in the Larry K. Durham Sports Center (located on the UTEP campus) on Saturday, February 23rd  and at the 1:00 pm UTEP women’s basketball game vs. UTSA.

Additionally, our UTEP Athletics’ Life Skills office staff and our female student athletes will be available to speak at local schools from January 17th through February 28th. These women can visit your campus to speak about the importance of academics, athletics, and leadership. If you are interested in having speakers come to your school, please complete the request form at http://www.utepathletics.com/ot/ngwd-speaker-request.html.

Please mark your calendars for two additional UTEP Athletics events. We invite you and your school to join us at the UTEP women’s rifle match vs. Alaska on Saturday, February 16th at 10:30am located at the UTEP Military Science building, as well as UTEP Women’s Tennis vs UTSA on Friday, February 22nd at noon located at the El Paso Tennis Club.  These events will be free and food will be provided for you and your guests.

Please take the time to nominate a young lady from your school by filling out the following FORM. The deadline is Monday, February 4th.

UTEP Athletics would also like to invite everyone to all of these designated events to celebrate NGWSD 2019.
