Aaron Foster will begin his second season as the Miners’ cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Foster was hired on Dec. 15, 2023.

UTEP’s pass defense came up with some solid performances during the 2024 season. The Miners allowed a season-low 115 pass yards against Southern Utah and yielded 132 yards at Colorado State. The “Orange Swarm” defense picked off four FIU passes, helping to lead the Miners to their first win of the season. It was the most interceptions by a UTEP defense since 2011 and the most picked off in the Sun Bowl since 2008. UTEP allowed only 183 passing yards in its double overtime win over Kennesaw State.

Cornerback Josiah Allen started in 10 of 12 games and led all UTEP corners with 61 tackles and ranking sixth overall on the team. Allen added a team-high 43 solo tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, an interception and tied for the team lead with five breakups.

Cornerback AJ Odums started the first four games and put up solid numbers before missing the remainder of the season following an injury. Odums recorded 15 tackles, an interception and four pass breakups.

Amier Boyd-Matthews stepped up when Odums went down, starting in four of nine games played. Boyd-Matthews totaled 16 tackles (12 solo) with a tackle for loss, two interceptions, three breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

True freshman CB Justin Content saw action in nine games. Content made four starts, including the last four of the season. Content tallied four tackles and a pass breakup.

Cornerback Jaylon Shelton started in three of 11 games played, tallying 26 tackles with three pass breakups.

Foster came to the Sun City after serving as Walden’s cornerbacks coach/pass game coordinator at Austin Peay in 2023. The Governors finished 9-3 overall and 6-0 in United Athletic Conference action, while claiming a UAC Championship and a FCS playoff bid.

Redshirt sophomore CB Jevon Mclver Jr. ranked 12th in FCS and led the UAC with 13 total passes defended (12 breakups) during the 2023 season. The Governors’ defense was all the over ball, as it amassed 63 pass breakups. Redshirt senior CB Cedarius Doss was also named to the all-conference second team after leading APU and ranking second in the UAC with three interceptions. Doss rated fifth in the UAC with 10 total passes defended.

Before his season in Clarksville, Tenn., Foster spent two campaigns at Lenoir-Rhyne. He served as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Bears, who ranked fifth at the NCAA Division II level in passing efficiency defense in 2021 (95.3) and ninth in 2022 (100.2). During his time in Hickory, N.C., Foster also helped the Bears place 16th in DII in scoring defense (16.4 ppg) in 2021 and 21st in total defense (278.0 ypg) in 2022.

Prior to Lenoir-Rhyne, Foster was the defensive backs coach and video coordinator at Colgate, and a special teams/recruiting assistant at Wake Forest. In 2017, Colgate led the Patriot League and ranked seventh nationally with 16 interceptions.

Foster played collegiately at Bowling Green, where he appeared in 67 games over four seasons and helped the Falcons win the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship. He started 14 games as a senior when the Falcons went 10-4 and won the MAC title over Northern Illinois.

Foster also played professionally for the Tri-Cities Fever of the Indoor Football League after being invited to the Dallas Cowboys’ minicamp in 2014.

Foster received his Bachelor of Healthcare Administration from Bowling Green State University in December 2014.

Foster comes to the Sun City with his wife, Julie.
