Davian Clarke

Davian Clarke joined the UTEP track and field coaching staff on July 19, 2012. Clarke will be entering his 10th season at UTEP.
 
Clarke has coached 15 athletes to Conference USA titles and has been a part of 10 C-USA team titles.

During the 2019 season, he coached Sean Bailey to a third-place finish indoors at the C-USA Championships. The women’s 4x400m  scored valuable points and garnered second place to help secure the 2019 C-USA indoor title. Kimisha Chambers was C-USA champion in the 400mH, clocking a time of 57.82. She tallied the second-fastest time (400mH) in program history and Dreshanae Rolle ran 58.88, the fourth-fastest time in program history in the 400mH. Clarke also coached Bailey to the fourth-fastest time in program history outdoors with a 45.19 and fifth-fastest indoors with 46.86 in the 400m. Bailey qualified for the NCAA Regional meet along with Rolle and Chambers. Bailey ended up 13th with a time of 45.78 at the NCAA Final in Austin, Texas, missing the 400m finals. He then ran at the Jamaican National World Championships Trials where he was third in the semifinals, registering a time of 45.42.

Clarke tutored senior Asa Guevara to a 2018 C-USA outdoor title in the 400m. The sprinter clocked in a personal-best time of 45.26, which ranked him 14th nationally. The sprinter earned a spot at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
 
Also helped lead the women’s distance medley relay to an indoor conference title in 2018.

During the 2017 season, he coached the women’s indoor 4x400m relay team that notched a silver medal at the C-USA Indoor Championship sealing a three-point victory over Rice to claim UTEP’s third consecutive indoor title. During the outdoor season, Clarke helped the women’s team secure its first outdoor conference title in program history over Middle Tennessee. Coached Alejandro Alcazar, who helped the Miners claim the C-USA title in the men's DMR.

In the women’s 4x100m relay, Clarke put together a team that notched gold with a season-best time of 44.69 at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, earning a spot at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Clarke also mentored Yanique Bennett who captured gold at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.52 and qualified to the NCAA West Preliminaries. Under Clarke, Asa Guevara notched a bronze medal finish at the indoor conference championship in the 400m qualifying to the NCAA West Preliminaries and finishing 17th overall, stopping the clock at 46.31. Also mentored Guevara in the men's DMR. The relay team secured the school record with a winning time of 9:31.13.

In 2016, Clarke mentored the women's 4x400m relay team took gold at the C-USA Indoor Championships, which surged the women to earn their second consecutive C-USA Indoor title. Clarke directed junior Yanique Bennett in the 400m hurdles, as she placed second.

Under Clarke's guidance, sophomore Asa Guevara earned a spot in the 100m dash at the 2016 NCAA West Preliminaries after recording a time of 10.42w at the UTEP Invitational.

Clarke coached Eric Cray of the Philippines at the 2016 World Indoor Championships. Cray set a national record of 48.98 in the 400m hurdles, while hitting 6.57 in the 60m dash to finish sixth in his semifinal race. Cray won bronze at the Asian Indoor Championships in the 60m dash. Cray competed in the Rio Olympics representing the Philippines as Clarke was the head coach for the Philippines track and field delegation. 

In 2015, Clarke directed the women’s outdoor 4x100m relay team to gold finish at the C-USA Championships, the women’s indoor 4x400m relay team to a first-place showing at the C-USA Championships and the women’s 4x100m relay team to the NCAA West Preliminaries. 

He helped Aiyanna Stiverne notch 14 top-10 finishes during the 2015 campaign between the outdoor and indoor season in the 200m dash, 400m dash and 600m run. Stiverne also appeared in the NCAA West Preliminaries in the 400m dash for the second straight year.

A-Shawni Mitchell closed out a solid career under Clarke. Mitchell registered 10 top-10 finishes during 2015 in the 200m and 400m dash. Mitchell also qualified in the 400m dash at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Senior hurdler Roberto Camacho showed tremendous strides during his final campaign. Camacho won two races in the 400m hurdles and registered a season-best time of 51.05 at the Conference USA Championships to take silver and earn an appearance in the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Working as an assistant coach in hurdles, sprints and relays, Clarke guided the women's 4x100m relay to the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time since 2008. He also directed the women's 4x400m relay to three crowns that season, including two Conference USA titles.

Mentoring Aiyanna Stiverne, Clarke coached the freshman to a personal best of 24.25 in the 200m, garnering her a bid to the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary Round. Stiverne was one of six 400m runners who qualified to represent the USA at the World Junior Championships. In the midst of qualifying, she set a personal-best time of 54.10.

On the men's side, Clarke assisted the men's team to its first Conference USA indoor crown since 2006. He guided the men's 4x400m relay to a silver finish helping UTEP claim the 2014 Conference USA title with 123 points, a 45.5-point advantage over second place, LA Tech.

Clarke also led transfer Roberto Camacho to his first appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Round and the No. 33 spot in the NCAA West Region in the 400m hurdles.

Clarke came to UTEP from the University of North Carolina where he served as the assistant coach for men's and women's sprints, hurdles and relays. While at North Carolina, Clarke mentored 12 All-Americans, one US World Championships finalist, six individual NCAA qualifiers, three relay NCAA qualifiers, five ACC Champions, two ACC relay titles, two ACC All-Academic recipients and 29 All-ACC performers.

Prior to North Carolina, Clarke was the head coach of the 2010 Jamaican World Indoor Team. He led the team to a gold-medal finish in the women's 60m and guided the women's 4x400m relay team, which broke the Jamaican indoor record and took bronze at the World Indoor Championships.

Clarke spent four years coaching for the Pursuit of Dreams Track Club in Austin, Texas.

Clarke worked as an assistant sprints coach and director of operations at Auburn University. During his time with the Tigers, Clarke helped lead the women's team to its first NCAA Outdoor Championship title in 2006. Prior to serving as an assistant coach for the Tigers, Clarke was a volunteer coach for Auburn and helped produce one World Champion, four World Championship medalist, three NCAA Champions and four SEC Champions.

Clarke graduated in 1998 from the University of Miami with a bachelor's degree in business administration and organization. As a student-athlete, he compiled six All-American honors, two NCAA titles, one All-Academic team honor, 13 All-Big East honors and nine Big East titles. Clarke set seven school records for the Hurricanes, including the outdoor 400m and 200m dash. 

Clarke won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics in the 4x400m relay. He represented Jamaica in the Olympic Games in 1996, 2000 and 2004. Clarke is a two-time World Champion in the 4x400m relay and a silver medalist in the 400m.

Clarke competed on the professional athletics circuit for 10 years and ended his career with Jamaican records in the indoor and outdoor 4x400m, 300m indoor (32.94) and 400m junior record (45.21). Clarke was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

Clarke is a USATF level 1 certified coach, certified strength and conditioning coach and a former member of the IAAF Athletes Commission. He also spoke at the USTFCCCA Coaches Convention.

He, his wife and their son Nathaniel reside in El Paso.
