Gary Brewster, Andrew Everest, David Lattin, James Munyala and Kim Turner will be inducted as the 11th class of the UTEP Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at the Larry K. Durham Center Hall of Champions.
Three sports are represented in the class of 2012 as two men's basketball players, two track stars and a football player have been chosen to join an elite group of Miner alums.
Brewster was tabbed All-Western Athletic Conference twice (1975-76) during his career at UTEP. One of the toughest players in school history, he scored 1,213 points and pulled down 673 rebounds with 14 double-doubles during his time in El Paso. Brewster accounted for nearly a quarter of UTEP's points and rebounds during the 1974-75 season that ended with a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Brewster was a third round selection by Buffalo in the 1976 NBA Draft. He later returned to UTEP to serve as an assistant coach under the legendary Don Haskins.
A member of the football team from 1947-51, Everest was the center linebacker. Everest was co-captain of the 1950 squad and participated in the 1949 and 1950 Sun Bowl. He was named to UTEP's Men of Mines list and Who's Who Amongst American Colleges. Everest has 43 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional level, serving as an NFL assistant coach under Bum Phillips with the New Orleans Saints and as player personnel director for the Minor League Football League. He also served as athletic director at the University of North Texas. Everest was inducted into the All-American Football Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1997 as an outstanding assistant coach.
Lattin was a member of Texas Western College's 1966 NCAA Championship team. He averaged a double-double his junior year (15.1 ppg and 10.1 rpg) and compiled 26 games with double-digit points and rebounds throughout his college career. On March 18, 1967, Lattin scored a career-high 34 points against Wyoming in the NCAA Tournament. He was named to four All-America teams following the 1966-67 campaign before being selected by San Francisco with the 10th pick in the NBA Draft. A Houston native, "Big Daddy D" played two years in the NBA (1967-69) and three seasons in the ABA (1970-73) and enjoyed his finest professional season in 1971-72, averaging 12.6 points with the Pittsburgh Condors.
Munyala won three consecutive NCAA steeplechase titles from 1975-77 and was runner-up in the event at the NCAA Championships as a senior. Munyala was a member of UTEP's distance medley relay teams that claimed back-to-back national titles in 1976 and 1977. He won the 1978 NCAA indoor championship in the mile, recording the third-fastest time in program history (3:59.81). Munyala led the men's cross country team to three NCAA titles. In 1977, Munyala posted the second-fastest time in school history in the steeplechase (8:21.6). Munyala was an 11-time NCAA All-American and a seven-time All-WAC honoree.
Turner became only the fifth female in school history to win a NCAA crown when she claimed the 100-meter hurdles title at the 1984 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The seven-time All-American won two silver medals at the NCAA Championships in the 60m hurdles (1982 indoors) and the 100m hurdles (1983 outdoors). She also took the medal stand with third-place finishes in the 100m hurdles (1982 outdoors) and 60m hurdles (1983 indoors). Turner set the school record in the 60m hurdles in 1981 with a time of 8.30, which was later broken in 2012. In 1981 and 1983, she posted the fastest time in school history in the 100m hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 12.95 seconds. Turner won a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles at the 1984 Olympics.
The five inductees will also be honored during the Oct. 6 football game against SMU.
The dinner will be held on Oct. 5 at the Larry K. Durham Center Hall of Champions and is set to begin at 7 p.m. Individual tickets are available for $25 or tables of eight are available for the equivalent of $160.
