Vince Hunter Men's Basketball
Vince Hunter averaged 18 points and 9.5 rebounds to aid the UTEP men's basketball team to a road sweep to start Conference USA play. Hunter connected on a combined 68.2 percent (15-of-22) of his shots in the two contests, aided by going 9-of-10 from the floor at North Texas on Jan. 2. He also hit three free throws and secured nine rebounds to lead the Miners to the 85-71 conquest against UNT. Hunter followed that up with a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) in 32 minutes of action in the 66-57 win at Rice on Jan. 4. Hunter also did damage with passing (four assists).
Irene Gari Women's Basketball
Irene Gari averaged 11.5 points and 7.0 rebounds to help lead the UTEP women's basketball team to a pair of victories in its first week of Conference USA play. Gari pitched in eight points and three rebounds in 22 minutes of action in the 60-58 defeat of North Texas on Jan. 2 before having a big night in the 54-51 victory against Rice on Jan. 4. The junior tallied 15 points to go along with a career-best 11 rebounds for her first career double-double while logging a personal-high tying 36 minutes of action.
