DALLAS – UTEP sprinter Xavier Butler was named the Conference USA Male Freshman of the Week for a second time this season following his performance at the New Mexico Team Open as announced by league officials on Tuesday. The CUSA weekly awards are presented by Blenders Eyewear.

Butler opened the weekend by clocking in a personal-best 20.95 in the men's 200-meter dash and ranking no. 1 in CUSA. He beat his previous best 21.21 in his UTEP debut at the Stan Scott Memorial on Jan. 13. Butler's new time ranks tied fifth with Daniel Ward (2005) on the program's top-10 list.

The product of Freeport, Texas, also clocked in a personal-best 6.75 in the men's 60-meter dash prelims on Jan. 27, ranking fifth in CUSA.

Butler's first weekly freshman honor came on Jan. 16 following his efforts at Texas Tech's Stan Scott Memorial.

Butler and the Miners will conclude regular-season action at Texas Tech's Jarvis Scott Open on Feb. 9-10 at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center. UTEP will then travel to Lynchburg, Va., for the 2024 CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 23-25.
