El Paso Native Rayos Signs With Miners

El Paso native Stephanie Rayos has signed a national letter of intent to play for the UTEP women's basketball team head coach Keitha Green announced Thursday.

"Stephanie is a very good basketball player and a excellent student," said Green. "I am very impressed with her basketball skills. She brings a well rounded game to UTEP.

"She can score in several ways from the perimeter by driving to the basket, shooting the three and she goes hard to the glass and rebounds."

Rayos, a 6-0 forward, will join the Miners from Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz., where she was a honorable mention All-America this past season.

"Stephanie is one of those rare athletes who excels on the court, in the classroom and in the community," said Cochise head coach Steve Lane. "She is an all-around player; quick, fast, jumps well, strong, inside and outside threat on offense, defends well, great speed and conditioning. She is exciting to watch play and a pleasure to coach."

Cochise's captain in 2002-03, she ranked fifth in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in scoring (20.3 ppg), eighth in rebounding (8.4 rpg), while leading the league in steals (4.9 spg) and three-point field goal percentage (49.5 percent, 46-of-92). She also shot 51.3 percent from the field and 82.3 percent from the free throw line.

Her performance on the court earned her the team MVP, first team All-Region I, first team All-ACCAC.

As a freshman she averaged 12.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and led the conference with 4.4 steals per game.

A standout in the classroom, Rayos was an Academic All-American, Cochise's Academic Athlete of the Year, Education Student of the Year and listed in Who's Who among American College Students.

Before attending Cochise, Rayos was a standout at Ysleta High School for coach Sara Nufer. A three-year starter, Rayos was twice chosen to the All-District 1-4A team. She is the only Ysleta player to score over 1,000 points, finishing with 1,024. Rayos averaged 12.0 points, 2.1 assists and 3.0 steals in her three-year varsity career.

She will have two years of eligibility.
