UTEP Sweeps UT-Pan American In Season Opener

SAN ANTONIO -- The UTEP tennis team swept UT-Pan American 7-0 in its first dual match of the spring season in San Antonio, Texas on Friday.

Martina Rezar led the way at the No. 1 spot defeating Vanessa Hedinger, 6-4, 6-3. Ta Spirta, Joanna Furdyna, Gilat Barzilai, Adriana Boykova and Katherine Palider also garnered match wins.

"The first match of the season is always the hardest," said head coach Jamie Campbell. "It is good to get our first win against a Division-I opponent, but we have to look toward the next match."

In doubles action, Rezar and Boykova volleyed to a 9-8 (7-1) win over Hedinger and Alan Breen at No. 1, while Furdyna and Palider topped Elysia Sloan and Ana Pena, 8-4 at No. 2. The tandem of King and Spirta also won their doubles match.

UTEP returns to action Saturday at 8 a.m., when the Miners take on UT-San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.
