NJCAA All-American Erica Yancey (5-9/G/Kansas City, Mo./Penn Valley C.C.) has signed a national letter of intent to play for the UTEP women's basketball program announced head coach Keitha Green on Thursday.
"Erica is a player that can really shoot the basketball and we are very pleased to add a good shooter to our team," said Green. "She is a great signee for us and we are excited about adding her offensive abilities to our mix."
Yancey was selected to the NJCAA Division II All-America second team and was a finalist for the WBCA/Kodak All-America team while playing for coach Rebecca Monachino-Dennis and Penn Valley Community College (Mo.) last season. She garnered NJCAA All-Region 16 honors and was named Penn Valley's Most Valuable Player as well.
In 2003-04, she ranked 12th in the NJCAA in scoring, averaging 19.7 points per game. Yancey chipped in 7.7 rebounds (245), 3.3 steals (106) and 2.7 assists (85) in 32 games as a sophomore.
She also shot 43.7 percent (210-481) from the floor, 41.5 percent (83-200) from outside and 84.8 percent (128-151) from the free throw line.
A deadly three-point shooter, Yancey hit five or more three-pointers in nine different games last season, including going 7-for-10 from outside against State Fair Community College. She had a career-high 34 points versus North Arkansas College.
Penn Valley finished 21-11 in 2003-04, advanced to the national tournament and ranked 14th in the final NJCAA Division II poll.
As a freshman, Yancey averaged 6.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 30 games. She led the team by shooting 38.4 percent (28-73) from three-point range.
Yancey prepped at St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City, Mo., prior to her two years at Penn Valley. As a three-year letterwinner, she was the team's MVP as a senior.
She was also recruited by Arkansas, Western Illinois and Northeastern University. She will have two years of eligibility with the Miners.
