Barie, Tynes To Enter UTEP Track Hall Of Fame

Former UTEP track and field greats Zakaria Barie and Andrew Tynes will be enshrined into the school’s track and field hall of fame on Friday night in a ceremony at the Larry K. Durham Sports Center. The event begins at 7 p.m. MST.

Barie is one of UTEP’s and Tanzania’s all-time top distance runners. During his Miner career he gained NCAA All-America honors five times and won two Western Athletic Conference titles from 1982-84. Barie captured the 1983 NCAA cross country individual title and was part of three NCAA team championships.

A two-time Olympian, Barie placed fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the 1982 NCAA Championships. During the 1982-83 academic year, the Arusha, Tanzania, native took the silver medal in the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and was the runner-up at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Barie posted personal bests of 7:51.46 in the 3,000, 13:29.47 in the 5,000 and 27:38.6 in the 10,000 during his career. In the school record books he ranks third in the 10,000 and seventh in the 5,000 outdoors and third in the 3,000 and fifth in the 5,000 indoors.

Tynes gained NCAA All-American six times, was a one-time NCAA champion and took nine WAC titles during his UTEP career which spanned from 1991-94.

The native of Nassau, Bahamas, he won the 200-meter dash at the 1994 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was also third in the 400-meter relay and fifth in the 1,600-meter relay during the 1994 outdoor season. Tynes was the runner-up in the 200 at the 1993 and 1994 NCAA Indoor Championships, while taking sixth in the 200 at the 1994 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Tynes has personal bests of 10.18 in the 100, 20.22 in the 200 and 20.76 in the indoor 200. He holds the Bahamas’ national record in the 100 and ranks fourth in the 200 and seventh in the 100 at UTEP. He has a share of the school record as part of the 800-meter relay and the 1,600-meter relay. In addition his ranks third in the indoor 200 at the school.

After completing his collegiate eligibility Tynes has remained active on the international scene. He has competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games

The hall of fame ceremony is in conjunction with the UTEP Invitational, which will be held Saturday at Kidd Field. The competition begins with the field events at 9:45 a.m. MST, followed by the running events at 3 p.m. MST.
