Led by Timika Williams' double-double, the UTEP women's basketball team dominated the boards en route to cruising to an 80-68 win against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday evening. UTEP improves to 7-2 on the campaign, including 5-0 at home, while the Lady Panthers fall to 3-7.
The Miners out-rebounded PVAMU to the tune of 48-28 and remained unbeaten on the campaign (7-0) when winning the battle of the boards.
"It is a very good win," UTEP head coach Keitha Adams said. "Prairie View A&M has played an unbelievable schedule, and I've seen them play very well this year against quality competition. It was great that we were able to use our young players tonight and put it in the win column."
Jareica Hughes and Izabela Piekarska joined Williams in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Natasha Lacy also had a tremendous game, flirting with a quadruple-double. The senior finished with nine pints, 10 boards, eight assists and six steals in an all-around effort.
Piekarska made some history, as well, as she became the fourth player in program history with at least 900 points and 500 rebounds. The senior joins former Miner greats Be Stoney, Kiana Taylor and Chris Hall to accomplish the feat.
"It's an outstanding accomplishment," Adams said. "She's helped us win a lot of ball games and has been a good player for us."
Prairie View actually led early in the contest, before UTEP turned a 4-1 deficit into a lead they would never relinquish courtesy of a 13-2 run. The effort afforded the Orange and Blue a 14-6 edge. After the Lady Panthers answered with a 6-2 mini spurt to climb within four (16-12), the Miners rattled off nine straight points to vault out to a double-digit advantage.
UTEP eventually pushed its advantage out to as many as 18 (38-20) before the Lady Panthers closed it to within 12 at the half (42-30). It marked the eighth time on campaign that the Miners enjoyed an advantage at the break, and they would move to 7-1 when doing so.
In the second stanza, UTEP extended its lead to as many as 25 (61-38) as the Miners toyed with PVAMU. The Lady Panthers were determined to not go down without a fight, as they came alive from long range. The effort allowed them to climb within 10 points (73-63) with 3:26 left, but the Miners scored five straight to seal the win.
UTEP will be back in action at perennial Mid-American Conference power Toledo at 5:05 p.m. MST on Friday.
