UTEP’s Elias Koech and Oludamola Osayomi each took gold medals as the Miner track and field team closed up competition at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday.
Koech won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:50.34.
Koech then helped the 1,600-relay of John Alipio, Dominic Kiprono Tanui and Daniel Ward to the meet title. They ran 3:12.09 to hold off charging Nebraska (3:12.59).
He was not the only Miner to shine on the men’s side. Mickael Hanany placed second in the triple jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 51-0 (15.54). Two-sport star Tufick Shadrawy was eighth in the event with a mark of 45-10 3/4 (13.99).
All-American Ward took the silver in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.24, while Nicodemus Ng'etich was fourth (4:10.50) and Kiprono Tanui (4:11.82) was seventh in the mile.
Osayomi won the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.42. She did not run the 200 final after running four races over the weekend.
In the 800, Fatimoh Muhammed posted a provisional qualifying time of 2:07.00 to take second. Junior Kelly Young just missed the qualifying standard taking fifth in 2:09.44.
Newcomer Nelly Tchayem jumped a provisional qualifying distance in the triple jump. She was the runner-up with a season-best mark of 42-4 (12.90).
Halimat Ismaila placed fourth in the 400-meter dash, running 55.30. Freshman Terry Conteras also tied for seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 5-4 1/4 (1.63).
