Team Notes: The Miners' NCAA Tournament matchup with Texas was the second between the two teams that year...earlier in the season, the Miners downed the Longhorns, 45-40, in the championship game of the Sun Carnival Classic in El Paso...Texas Western snapped Utah's 38-game home winning streak with a 51-48 triumph in Salt Lake City on Dec. 15, 1962...Jim Barnes scored a season-high 36 points against New Mexico State and snared a season-best 27 rebounds versus Hardin-Simmons...Texas Western ended the regular season rated first in the nation in rebound percentage (.596) and third in scoring defense (54.2 ppg), while Barnes was fifth in rebounding...Richardson, who made his only NCAA Tournament appearance as a player that season, went on to become a distinguished college coach at the University of Tulsa and the University of Arkansas.

Team Notes: Barnes set school seasonal records for points (816), scoring average (29.2 ppg), field goals (299), field goal attempts (532), free throws (218), free throw attempts (295), rebounds (537) and rebounding average (19.2 rpg)...he scored 51 points, still a school record, on Jan. 4, 1964 against Western New Mexico...he also established school game standards for field goals made (19) and attempted (30), as well as rebounds (36), in that game...the 1963-64 Texas Western team still holds school records for scoring margin (+17.2 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.360) and rebounding margin (+15.3 rpg)...in addition, the Miners recorded the second-best winning percentage (.893) in school annals, behind only the 1965-66 national champions' .966 clip...TWC rated second nationally in scoring defense (55.3 ppg), and fourth in rebounding (50.2 rpg) and scoring margin...the Miners posted winning streaks of 16 and seven games during the season...two of Texas Western's three losses came by a total of six points...Barnes fouled out of every game the Miners lost...Stoglin went on to become the head coach at Southwest Texas State University.

Team Notes: The defending national champions played the second half of the season without starting guard Bobby Joe Hill, who was lost due to injury...Hill played in eight games, averaging 4.9 points and shooting 33 percent from the field...Texas Western was dealt another blow late in the year when Shed was ruled ineligible prior to the NCAA Tournament...the Miners beat Seattle twice during the season (including in the NCAAs), avenging their only loss of the 1965-66 campaign...Texas Western was rated second in the preseason poll and ended the year rated 10th...the 5-6 Worsley was one of the shortest players in the game who could dunk a basketball.

Team Notes: Future NBA Hall of Famer Nate Archibald led UTEP to the NCAA Tournament in his final season with the Miners...Archibald scored a career-high 36 points in the Miners' NCAA loss to Utah State, making 13 of 21 shots from the floor and 10 of 11 from the line...Archibald shot 53 percent from the field and 83 percent from the charity stripe on the year, and scored 20 points or more in 14 of 25 games en route to becoming UTEP's first All-WAC player...Archibald was 17 for 20 from the line in UTEP's 77-64 triumph at Colorado State on Jan. 8, 1970...the Miners claimed the WAC title in their first year in the league...UTEP scored nine straight points to erase an 80-71 deficit with 2:53 remaining and edged Utah, 83-82, to clinch the conference crown on Feb. 28, 1970 at the Coliseum in El Paso...UTEP made a school-record 40 free throws against Arizona State on Jan. 17, 1970 in a 108-64 win...the Miners were a perfect 15 for 15 from the foul line versus Oklahoma Christian during a 61-45 victory on Dec. 3, 1969...the Miners averaged 79.1 points per game, the third-top seasonal scoring figure in the UTEP recordbooks...UTEP was ranked 20th in the final UPI poll.

Team Notes: The 1974-75 Miners were Gary Brewster's team. He scored 24 percent of the team's points and snagged 23 percent of the rebounds...Brewster's average of 15.4 points was nearly seven points higher than the Miners' second-leading scorer, Jake Poole (8.5 ppg)...Brewster played through the season with a nagging back injury which ultimately required surgery...the streaky Miners won their first nine games of the season and recorded eight straight victories late in the year...Brewster personified a tough Miner team which committed 614 fouls, a school record which stood until 1980...UTEP's season ended with a loss to undefeated Indiana in the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosier roster featured Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner and Scott May...the Miners led the nation in scoring defense (57.3 ppg) for the third consecutive season.

Team Notes: The 1983-84 team was one of the best in school annals, rocketing to as high as fifth in the Associated Press poll during the season...the Miners achieved their lofty ranking on Jan. 17, 1984, when they sported an unblemished 15-0 mark...UTEP closed out the campaign with a No. 9 ranking by AP...the Miners knocked off Indiana, 65-61, at the Special Events Center on Dec. 10, 1983, highlighting their stellar early-season play...it marked the second time that UTEP defeated Bob Knight's Hoosiers in El Paso, the first such occurrence coming during the 1972-73 campaign...the Miners also beat 15th-ranked Michigan in the Sun Carnival Classic and Louisiana Tech, which was led by All-American Karl Malone, during the preseason...UTEP trailed New Mexico by 10 points with 11 minutes to go before rallying to nip the Lobos, 60-59, on a running 20-footer by Luster Goodwin at the buzzer in Albuquerque on Jan. 28, 1984...Don Haskins was named the region coach of the year...UTEP finished 21-0 at home, to this day its best record in the Don Haskins Center...the Miners also averaged 11,568 fans at home and played before 11 sellout crowds, both school records...the Miners beat Wyoming and New Mexico in El Paso to capture the WAC Tournament crown.

Team Notes: Three UTEP players were named All-WAC (Dave Feitl, Luster Goodwin, Juden Smith), tying the school record...the Miners crushed Colorado State, 79-45, at the Special Events Center on Jan. 24, 1985, still their largest margin of victory over a conference foe in the arena to this day...San Diego State shocked the Miners, 88-81, in the WAC Tournament championship game in El Paso...Feitl set WAC Tournament records for free throws made (14) and attempted (20) in that game...Feitl nearly missed recording UTEP's first-ever triple double in the Miners' opening round WAC Tournament win over Utah. He had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists versus the Utes. To this day, no UTEP player has had a triple-double...UTEP went to the line 55 times -- a school record -- and made 39 in the NCAA Tournament win over Tulsa...the 55 free throw attempts is still an NCAA Tournament record for first or second round games, and the 39 makes ranks second...three Miner players had 10 or more free throw attempts in that game (Feitl 12, Goodwin 10, Kent Lockhart 10).

Team Notes: Don Haskins' 25th year at UTEP produced another NCAA Tournament bid...only two players scored in double figures for the 1985-86 Miners, who held opponents to 60.1 points per game on 43 percent shooting...UTEP was undefeated at home with a 19-0 mark...the Miners claimed both the WAC regular season and tournament titles...UTEP's last two wins in the conference tournament came by a total of three points, including a 65-64 conquest of host Wyoming for the championship...Dave Feitl ended his career as UTEP's second all-time leading scorer (he currently ranks fifth)...during an eight-day stretch, the Miners posted wins over Georgetown, Ohio State, Alabama, BYU and Utah...UTEP won 14 consecutive games from Nov. 27 to Jan. 10...the Miners rose to as high as 15th in the polls during the season.

Team Notes: UTEP scored 2,588 points in 33 games, a school record, and also established a school seasonal standard for field goal percentage (.515)...it marked the third straight season that the Miners shot over 50 percent as a team...Hardaway, who posted the fifth-best scoring average in school annals, was named recipient of the Francis Pomeroy Naismith Award as the nation's best college player six feet tall or under...Hardaway was also chosen the WAC Player of the Year...he set a school record with 93 steals (2.8 per game)...Hardaway netted a career-high 32 points at Colorado State on Feb. 23, 1989...the Miners were 13-1 after downing BYU in El Paso, 91-76, on Jan. 7, 1989...UTEP won its first WAC Tournament title since 1986, upending Colorado State 73-60 in the championship game in Salt Lake City...UTEP was undefeated at home (18-0) for the third time in the history of the Don Haskins Center...UTEP tallied a school-record 16 blocked shots against Fort Lewis on Nov. 26, 1988, including seven by freshman David Van Dyke...the Miners closed out the 1980s by winning 227 games, capturing five WAC regular season titles and three WAC Tournament titles, and appearing in six NCAA Tournaments...UTEP was the seventh-winningest program in the nation during the `80s with a .735 winning percentage (227-82) behind North Carolina, UNLV, Georgetown, DePaul, Temple and Syracuse.

Team Notes: The Miners returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1990 without Tim Hardaway, who concluded an illustrious college career in 1989 with 1,586 points on his resume...the 1989-90 outfit was one of UTEP's most balanced offensive teams, as seven players averaged over five points per game and Maxey was the leading scorer at just 12.4 ppg...Don Haskins, battling a severe case of laryngitis, turned over bench duties to assistant coach Norm Ellenberger over the last 24 games of the season...Haskins still planned practice sessions and oversaw the game plan...the Miners finished the 1989-90 season unbeaten (17-0) when scoring 70 points or more...Maxey set a school game record by hitting all nine of his field goal attempts against BYU on Feb. 17, 1990...Joe Griffin dished out 14 assists, also a school record, versus Sam Houston State on Dec. 23, 1989...UTEP won its second consecutive WAC Tournament title in El Paso...Davis and Foster were both chosen in the second round of the 1990 NBA Draft...Hall was selected the WAC Newcomer of the Year.

Team Notes: A team that started the season with a lot of question marks ended up being one of Don Haskins' best squads...the Miners had lost two of their top four scorers from the 1990-91 campaign, had a new starting point guard in junior college transfer Eddie Rivera and weren't very deep in the post with just three players 6-8 or taller...UTEP opened the season 16-1 and rose to 19th in the Associated Press poll on Jan. 27...the Miners set school records with 922 field goals made and 217 blocked shots...Van Dyke blocked 116 shots (3.5 avg.) to set a school seasonal record, and finished with 336 rejections for his career...Don Haskins recorded his 600th win when UTEP prevailed at Wyoming, 73-72, on Feb. 27, 1992...the Miners' win over top-seeded Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament was one of the season's biggest shockers...UTEP clinched the 66-60 win when Johnny Melvin, a 65 percent free throw shooter, drained a pair of shots from the foul line with 13 seconds left and the Miners leading by two.
