DALLAS, Texas - The UTEP volleyball team fell to the SMU Mustangs, 3-2, on Friday night at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas.
Junior outside hitter Amy Sanders recorded a match-high 20 kills and 21 digs for her eighth double-double of the 2008 season.
The Miners, who trailed through most of the first set, scored seven consecutive points to take a 23-19 lead over the Mustangs. A Mustang attack error set up the Miners for set point and a Sanders kill gave the Miners the 25-22 win and 1-0 lead over the Mustangs. Sanders finished the set with eight kills aiding the Miners to a .333 hitting percentage over SMU's .162.
SMU came from behind to take the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-22. UTEP combined for a .318 hitting percentage in the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2 and force a fifth set.
Tied at six, the Mustangs used a four-point run to pull ahead in set number five and eventually win the match with a score of 15-12 in the fifth set.
UTEP travels to Tulsa, Okla., for a Sunday meeting with the Golden Hurricane.
