Trevor Vittatoe threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Moturi with 4:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, sending UTEP to a 24-21 victory over Tulane on Saturday night in the Sun Bowl.
Vittatoe completed 21 of 32 passes for 296 yards and three scores as the Miners (3-3, 3-0 C-USA) remained unbeaten in Conference USA and squared their record following an 0-3 start.
The victory sets up a battle for first place in C-USA's Western Division between the Miners and Tulsa (6-0, 3-0 C-USA) next Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium. The game will kickoff at 6 p.m. MDT and be carried nationally by CBS College Sports.
The UTEP defense, which allowed 21 points in the first half, pitched a shutout after the intermission, allowing the Miners to overcome a 21-14 deficit at the break.
A 28-yard field goal by Jose Martinez with 2:01 remaining in the third period drew the Miners to within 21-17.
UTEP snuffed out six Green Wave offensive drives in the second half. The Miners' Aaron King sacked Tulane quarterback Kevin Moore at the Tulane 25 yard line as time expired.
Andre Anderson had a big game for Tulane (2-4, 1-2 C-USA), rushing 29 times for 255 yards. He scored all three of the Green Wave's touchdowns on the night.
