David Johnson threw for 434 yards and five touchdowns in three quarters of action as Tulsa gained the upper hand in the Conference USA Western Division race with a 77-35 victory over UTEP on Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane (7-0, 4-0 C-USA) outscored the Miners 49-7 over the final three quarters after the game was deadlocked at 28 heading into the second period.
Tulsa racked up 791 yards of offense, including 470 passing and 348 rushing. Brennan Marlon reeled in six catches for 233 yards and Tarrion Adams rushed for 114 yards on 15 carries to lead the Golden Hurricane.
Trevor Vittatoe passed for 321 yards and four touchdowns for the Miners, and Kris Adams tallied five receptions for 126 yards for his second 100-yard game of the season.
The Miners (3-4, 3-1 C-USA) had their three-game winning streak snapped. UTEP will be idle next week and return to action on Nov. 1 versus Rice at 7:05 p.m. MDT in the Sun Bowl.
