EL PASO, Texas - The University of Texas at El Paso volleyball team suffered their first Conference-USA road loss, 3-0, at UAB on Friday night at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
"We're disappointed with the way we competed during stretches during this match," head coach Ken Murphy said. "UAB took advantage of the mismatch and played a really high level of volleyball."
Catherine Chavez, the C-USA kills leader going into the match, left the game early in the first set due to an undisclosed knee injury.
"It was hard to recover from losing Catherine so early in the match," Murphy continued. "We had to get our lineup straight and we had a hard time keeping our composure. We had a lot of opportunities in the third game and we weren't able to capitalize from them. We made mistakes at the end of that gave UAB some easy points."
The Miners fell to 5-11 for the season and 1-2 in conference play, while the Blazers improved to 13-3, 3-1.
Junior outside hitter Amy Sanders led the Miners with 14 digs and eight kills.
UTEP returns to C-USA action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Memphis for a noon matchup at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
