Tulsa Rides Big Second Half to Win Over UTEP

Brett McDade scored 16 of his career-high 26 points in the second half, as Tulsa overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and handed UTEP a 73-50 loss on Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

UTEP (14-9, 5-5 C-USA) followed up one of its best halves of the season with its worst. After holding Tulsa (13-10, 5-6 C-USA) to 28.6 percent shooting in the first half and outrebounding the Golden Hurricane 27-16, the Miners were outscored 50-18 in the second period. Tulsa also outrebounded UTEP 24-13 to catch UTEP on the glass 40-40.

UTEP shot 25.9 percent in the second half in scoring its fewest points in a half this season. The Miners' 50 points were also a season low.

Tulsa opened the second half with a 24-5 run to build a 47-37 lead with 9:27 remaining. UTEP couldn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Randy Culpepper led the Miners with 19 points, including 11 in the first half. Culpepper hit three 3-pointers during an early 17-2 run as UTEP took a 17-5 lead, its largest of the night.

Stefon Jackson added 15 points on 4-of-12 shooting for the Miners, his lowest scoring game in Conference USA play this season.

Ray Reese scored 15 points for Tulsa, which hit 51.9 percent of its shots in the second half. The Golden Hurricane went 16-for-16 at the charity stripe in the second half and 19-for-22 for the game.

UTEP, now in a three-way tie for sixth place in the C-USA standings, will play at fifth-place Marshall (14-10, 6-5 C-USA) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. MST. The Herd is 12-2 at home following Saturday's 68-54 victory over Tulane.
