UTEP's Braxton Amy, the team's leading tackler last season, will miss the entire 2008 campaign after tearing his ACL in practice last Tuesday, UTEP head coach Mike Price announced on Monday.
Amy was an honorable mention All-Conference USA selection by the coaches last season after posting 112 tackles in 12 games. He was sixth in C-USA and tied for 41st nationally in tackles per game (9.3). Amy started the last nine games of the season and had double-digit stops in six contests. He was an honorable mention Freshman All-American by The Sporting News in 2006, when he had 41 tackles in five starts.
Amy will undergo surgery following finals in May. The typical recovery time is six to 12 months.
The native of Richmond, Texas will have at least one year of eligibility remaining in 2009. UTEP athletic department officials will petition the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility. Amy has already used his redshirt year in 2005 when he was rehabbing a high school knee injury.
Amy was playing the linebacker/safety hybrid Miner position this spring in UTEP's new-look 3-3-5 defensive scheme.
