Volleyball Falls to Sacred Heart in Five

Providence, R.I. - Two Miners recorded double-doubles as the UTEP volleyball team fell to Sacred Heart University in five sets on Saturday afternoon at the Friars Classic in Providence, R.I.

Junior outside hitter Amy Sanders led all UTEP players with 12 kills, 13 digs and seven aces. Catherine Chavez had a team-high 17 digs and 10 kills against the Pioneers.

UTEP took the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-20, senior middle blocker Daidre Mendenhall's consistency at the net gave the Miners momentum through the match. The Spokane, Wash., native finished the match with nine blocks, and six kills.

Sacred Heart recovered after trailing through the entire third set to tie the Miners 19-19 and later take a 22-19 lead. The duo of setter Patty Jarmoc and Mendenhall propelled the Miners with a kill each and teamed up for two block assists to put UTEP up 23-22. Three consecutive Miner errors gave the Patriots a 25-23 win to force a fourth set.

The Patriots tied the match, 2-2, with a 25-23 win over the Miners in set number four and send the match to five sets. Sacred Heart used eight of their 10 block assists of the night to put UTEP away 15-12.

The Miners will close out the Friars Classic when they take on Providence College at 3 p.m. (MT) at the Mullaney Gymnasium.
