Volleyball Defeats UIC, 3-1

FARGO, N.D. – Amy Sanders and Catherine Chavez recorded double-doubles as the UTEP volleyball team defeated Illinois-Chicago, 3-1, in the opening game of the Doublewood Inn Classic in the campus of North Dakota State University.

The Miners rallied back from a 14-5 deficit in the first set to take a 1-0 lead with a 26-24 win over the Flames. UIC evened the match taking the second set 25-20.

Down 10-4 in set number three, UTEP went on an eight-point run to take a 12-10 lead over the Flames. Patty Jarmoc recorded four serving aces from behind the line as the Miners took the game 25-22.

UIC led through the first half of the fourth set before tying the game at 14-14. Chavez and Sanders went to work at the net to give the Miners the advantage on the scoreboard. Libero KeAnne Langford, who finished the game with 26 digs, inched the Miners closer to victory with a service ace that set up the first match point. Two serves later senior Keisha Hyman-Gifth stepped up and put the Flames away with her fourth kill of the match.

Chavez registered a team-high 21 kills, and 12 digs for her third double-double of the year.

Sanders had 13 kills and 15 digs for UTEP, while middle blocker Aidan Mooney led all Miners with four blocks and averaged a .417 attack percentage.

UTEP will return to the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse at 3 p.m. for a scheduled meeting with Northern Colorado. The Miners will take on host North Dakota State tomorrow at 9 a.m. to close out their participation at the Doublewood Inn Classic presented by ASICS.
