UTEP-Marshall Box Score (PDF)
Stefon Jackson put up 35 points and set a school record by going 20-for-20 from the line as UTEP edged Marshall, 74-67, in a Valentine's Day tussle on Saturday at the Don Haskins Center.
The Miners (15-9, 6-4 C-USA) won for the fourth time in five games and swept their first two-game homestand of the Conference USA schedule. UTEP beat UCF, 73-68, on Wednesday.
UTEP also moved to 4-0 against Marshall since joining C-USA. The Thundering Herd, which has won one game away from home this season, fell to 11-14 overall and 3-7 in league action.
Marshall led only once, at 10-9 seven minutes into the game, but hung around until the final minute.
UTEP took its largest lead of the night, 47-34, on an Arnett Moultrie dunk with 14:41 to play. The Miners were still ahead by 10 (65-55) with three-and-a-half minutes to go before Marshall used a 9-1 run to close the gap to 66-64 on a free throw by Chris Lutz with 59 seconds left. UTEP, however, scored eight of the game's final 11 points, starting with Jackson's jumper with 34 seconds remaining.
Jackson was the only Miner in double figures with a game-high 35 points. The previous school record for free throws made without a miss in a single game was 14 by Omar Thomas twice during the 2004-05 season.
Jackson, who is shooting 84.7 percent from the charity stripe this season, has been in a groove over the last five games, going 56-for-59 from the line over that span.
Lutz led Marshall with 24 points, and Markel Humphrey added 18.
The Herd shot only 35.4 percent from the field, but stayed in the game by outrebounding the Miners 39-36, forcing 18 turnovers and hitting 10 three point shots.
Moultrie pulled down 12 boards for UTEP, which shot 47.8 percent, including 52.2 percent in the second half.
The Miners will play at Rice on Wednesday (6 p.m. MST).
