EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP softball team advanced to 9-6 on the season Friday morning after defeating Cal State Northridge in a 7-2 victory.
Stacie Townsend and Kelly Curran were in the circle for the Miners and together held the Matadors to a five hit, two run ball game.
In just two innings of work, Curran received the win and moved to 4-3 on the season.
Townsend, the starter for the Miners, pitched five innings and recorded five strikeouts and allowed one walk. She ended the day 2-for-2 at the plate, with two runs and an RBI.
The Miners found themselves in a hole at the start of the sixth inning with Cal State grasping to a 2-1 lead, with UTEP's only run coming off a Townsend solo homer in the bottom of the fourth.
A series of hits, hit-by-pitches and an intentional walk gave UTEP a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the sixth frame. Chelsea Troupe and Camilla Carrera were in scoring position, and Townsend, who was intentionally, was on first.
The rally started when Amber Bennett was hit by a pitch for an RBI, plating Troupe for a 2-2 score. With the bases still loaded, Jennifer Davis hit a soft liner which handcuffed the shortstop driving Carrera and Townsend home and gave the Miners the 4-2 advantage. Ashley Ellis's three-run blast sealed the deal and four batters later, the Miners walked away with the comeback victory.
With the long balls in the fourth and sixth innings UTEP added to their season total of 22 home runs.
The Miner's, who are an undefeated 3-0 in the tournament, will continue to defend their title against San Jose State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The tournament concludes with UTEP and Samford at 11 a.m. Sunday.
