EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP softball team defeated Samford, 3-1, en route to capturing its third consecutive UTEP Softball Invitational title. The win is the Miners' sixth-straight and moves them to 11-6 on the season.

Stacie Townsend (7-3) put up a good effort in the circle to receive the victory. She scattered four hits, gave up one run, and fanned eight in the outing.

Camilla Carrera recorded two of the Miners' eight hits, including a home run blast.

Kristy Lawrence gave Samford its only run of the game in the top of the first inning off a solo home run.

UTEP's Jennifer Stalter singled to centerfield in the bottom of the second driving in UTEP's Jennifer Davis to tie the game.

The Miners added to their final tally in the next frame that began with a walk by Chelsea Troupe. Carrera connected on the first pitch she faced in the inning that sailed over the leftfield wall good for two runs.

The Miners return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. as they take on Texas in a three-game home series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and conclude with a single game on Sunday.
