CBI Championship Series Game 3 Box Score (PDF)
Oregon State buried 12-of-19 three point shots and hit 56.5 percent of its field goal attempts in beating UTEP, 81-73, in the deciding game three of the CBI Championship Series on Friday at the Don Haskins Center.
The Miners closed out the season with a 23-14 record, continuing their steady progression under coach Tony Barbee. UTEP posted 14 wins in Barbee's first year, 19 in his second and 23 in his third.
Oregon State (18-18) won the CBI title a year removed from a 6-25 record and 0-18 mark in the Pac-10 Conference. Rickey Claitt, Oregon State's only senior who sees significant action, had a huge game on Friday, scoring a career-high 28 points. He was 8-for-9 from the field, 5-for-6 from outside and 7-for-8 from the line.
Lathen Wallace added 14 points and Roeland Schaftenaar scored 12 for Oregon State. Schaftenaar was named the CBI Finals MVP.
Stefon Jackson led the Miners with 26 points, completing a remarkable college career in which he tallied 2,456 points, including 908 this season. Jackson and Davidson's Stephen Curry are the only Division I players to score 900 points in 2008-09.
Arnett Moultrie chipped in with 19 points and Randy Culpepper had 16 for the Miners.
Moultrie finished the year with 302 rebounds. He is only the third UTEP player to compile 300 boards in a season, and the first to achieve the feat since the 1960's.
Culpepper set a school record with 170 three-point field goals on Friday, and Julyan Stone broke the school record for assists in a season with 236.
The Miners return four starters for the 2009-10 season and will have several talented newcomers bolstering the roster, including Arizona State transfer Christian Polk, Louisville transfer Derek Caracter, junior college import Myron Strong and high school phenom Marcus Ruppel.
