GREENVILLE, N.C.- The UTEP soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 setback at East Carolina on Friday. Leah Bagonis buried a second-chance opportunity at 7:07 of the first half, and despite the Miners' best efforts they would never ultimately recover.
UTEP (10-7-0, 3-6-0 C-USA) controlled the contest for much of the night. The Miners registered 13 shots, including nine tries on target, compared to respective totals of 10 and four by the homestanding Pirates (9-7-1, 4-4-1).
Chandra Morden recorded four stops to lead the way for the Miners' defense, while six different players took a shot on goal.
The Orange and Blue asserted themselves early on, with strong passing leading to a look on net for freshman Tori Martyn. She ripped a blast only to have it turned away by ECU netminder Christiane Cordero at 3:04.
The Pirates mounted their own offensive look four minutes later. A shot by Stephanie Shaw was initially turned away by Morden, but before the Orange and Blue could clear the zone Bagonis snuck in the loose change.
UTEP regrouped after the strike, and played with poise throughout the rest of the period. Off a corner kick in the 27th minute, a shot by freshman Azia Nicholson was blocked. The ball was controlled by Skye Schultz, who in a bit of misfortune rifled the rebound high.
Schultz was on target two minutes later, but Cordero-as would be the case throughout the contest- was there to make the save. At 31:22, senior Melissa Desilets registered a shot only to also be denied.
Junior Katie Dorman afforded the Miners their first look of the second stanza with a shot at 48:35, but Cordero was credited with the save. A little flurry by the Pirates nearly allowed them to double their advantage, but a shot by Jessica Woodward ricocheted off the post at 53:53. Morden was called upon minutes later, delivering in the form of a save on a shot by Bailey Wilcox at 55:54.
UTEP responded with a flurry of its own, but could not light up the scoreboard. The Miners fought to the very end, peppering Cordero with a trio of shots in the final 11 minutes. Each time, though, the keeper was there to make the save.
The Miners will be back in action when they play at Marshall at 10 a.m. MT on Sunday.
