Randy Culpepper scored a game-high 17 points as UTEP thumped Texas A&M-Kingsville, 75-48, in its final preseason exhibition on Friday night at the Don Haskins Center.
The Miners put the Division II Javelinas away with a 21-0 run in the first half, breaking an 11-11 tie and building a 32-11 cushion with 8:07 remaining in the opening period.
UTEP was ahead 40-20 at the half and blew out to leads of as many as 34 points in the second stanza.
The Miners shot 55.6 percent in the first half and fired at a 50 percent clip for the game. They dominated the smaller Javelinas in the paint, outscoring them 36-10, and scored 30 points off turnovers.
Christian Polk added 12 points and Claude Britten 10 for UTEP. Ten players etched their names into the scoring column for the Miners, including freshmen John Bohannon (seven points), Michael Perez (six points) and Michael Haynes (two points). Gabriel McCulley had a near double-double for UTEP with eight points and eight rebounds.
Texas A&M-Kingsville shot 28.3 percent, made 9-of-27 three pointers and committed 21 turnovers.
The Miners will tip off the regular season against Pacific on Friday (Nov. 12) at 7:05 p.m. The Tigers won 23 games last season and return four of their top five scorers. The Nov. 12 game will be an "Orange Out" in the Haskins Center as UTEP attempts to sell out its home opener for the first time since 1986.
Less than 3,000 tickets remain for the game.
