EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Trevor Vittatoe threw three touchdown passes Saturday night to lead UTEP to a 28-14 victory over SMU.
UTEP is bowl-eligible for the first time in five years and has six or more victories for only the seventh time in the last 40 seasons. The Miners finished 6-4 in 1970, 7-4 in 1987, 10-3 in 1988, 8-4 in 2000, 8-4 in 2004 and 8-4 in 2005.
Vittatoe, who was 17 of 28 for 183 yards with no sacks or interceptions, found Evan Davis, Pierce Hunter and Marlon McClure for first-half scores, leading the Miners (6-4, 3-4 Conference USA) to a 21-7 halftime lead. Leilyon Myers' 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter sealed the win and made UTEP bowl-eligible.
Kyle Padron threw a touchdown pass and ran for one for the Mustangs (5-5, 4-2). Padron was 28 of 44 for 255 yards including the TD to Aldrick Robinson, who finished with nine receptions for 131 yards.
There were no turnovers in the game.
