UTEP Vs. SMU Postgame Notes

  • Tonight's attendance was 23,127.
  • UTEP is bowl-eligible for the first time in five years and has six or more victories for only the seventh time in the last 40 seasons. The Miners finished 6-4 in 1970, 7-4 in 1987, 10-3 in 1988, 8-4 in 2000, 8-4 in 2004 and 8-4 in 2005.
  • UTEP has won six of the last eight meetings with SMU. The Miners hold a 6-4 advantage in games played in El Paso and are 6-1 against SMU in the last seven games in the Sun Bowl.
  • The Miners are 4-1 all-time in the Sun Bowl versus teams coached by June Jones, including 2-1 versus Hawaii and 2-0 versus SMU.
  • UTEP finishes 5-1 at home this season, making this only the eighth Miner team to post five or more victories in the Sun Bowl since it opened in 1963. UTEP was 6-1 at home in 1965, 5-1 in 1966, 5-1 in 1967, 6-0 in 1988, 5-0 in 2000, 5-1 in 2004 and 5-1 in 2005.
  • The Miners are 11-4 versus C-USA West Division teams in the Sun Bowl during the Mike Price era, including 3-0 against SMU.
  • UTEP has won its home finale in three straight seasons for the first time since an eight-game run from 1965-72 (includes Sun Bowl wins during the 1965 and 1967 campaigns).
  • Mike Price posts his 40th victory as UTEP's head coach. Only Mack Saxon (66), Mike Brumbelow (46) and Bobby Dobbs (41) have more wins among Miner coaches.
  • The 14 first-quarter points tied the most scored by the Miners in the period this season. UTEP also scored 14 points in the first quarter versus New Mexico and NM State.
  • Sophomore WR Marlon McClure scored the first touchdown of his career in the second quarter off a 13-yard pass from Trevor Vittatoe. McClure had a career-high for receiving in the first half alone (four catches for 60 yards). His previous best was 48 yards twice, the last at Marshall on Oct. 30.
  • Senior WR Kris Adams extended his streak of games with a catch to 34.
  • The sack by Marcus Bagley in the third quarter was the first of his career.
  • Senior QB Trevor Vittatoe tied the school record for touchdowns responsible for with 95. He shares the record with Jordan Palmer (2003-06).
  • Vittatoe passed Cincinnati's Gino Guidugli into fourth place on the Conference USA career total offense list with 11,822 yards.
  • Vittatoe moved into 15th place on the NCAA career passing yardage list, passing Notre Dame's Brady Quinn, NM State's Chase Holbrook and Marshall's Byron Leftwich tonight. Vittatoe has 11,943 career passing yards.
  • With 94 career touchdown passes, Vittatoe is now tied with BYU's Max Hall for the 18th-best figure in NCAA history.
  • With 11,822 yards of offense, Vittatoe is in 21st place on the all-time NCAA list. He passed Cincinnati's Gino Guidugli, Nevada's David Neill and Purdue's Drew Brees tonight.
  • With two sacks, the Miners tied their season high, also achieved versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Memphis.
  • Tonight's game marked the fourth time in 10 games that UTEP's opponent failed to score on its opening drive.
