EL PASO, TEXAS- Behind a double-double from Anete Steinberga (22 points, 10 boards), a dominating effort on the boards (49-29) and an unselfish approach on offense (29 assists), the UTEP women's basketball team stomped in-state foe Texas State, 94-57, at the Don Haskins Center on Friday.

The Miners (6-3) pounded the Bobcats (3-7) down low, tallying 50 of their 94 points in the paint. Steinberga and Ashley Milian (13 points) led the way, with both setting season highs for scoring. Junior Dietra Caldwell joined them in double figures with 14 points while senior Sviatlana Trukshanina and junior Gloria Brown each chipped in nine.

UTEP connected on 48.8 percent from the floor (39-80), with many of the looks the result of making the extra pass. The 29 assists rate as the third most in program history. Freshman guard Kelli Willingham dished out nine helpers while Caldwell pitched in four and Green and Trukshanina each registered three.

Another factor in the game was UTEP out-rebounding the visitors to the tune of 49-28. Steinberga tallied 10 rebounds while freshman Kayla Thornton notched eight. Brown finished with six caroms while Caldwell and Willingham each secured five. The Miners are now 6-1 this year and 17-3 over the past 20 games when winning the rebounding battle.

"We had a really good practice yesterday and look what happens," UTEP head coach Keitha Adams said. "It is a team win tonight."

Things didn't go nearly as well for Texas State, which finished with nine more turnovers (26) than field-goals made (17). The Bobcats hit on 37 percent from the floor (17-46), including a minute 25.9 percent (7-27) after the break. Diamond Ford (16 points) and Kelsey Krupa (13 points) were the lone bright spots for the visitors, who have now lost 29 of their past 31 road games.

The two teams traded blows early on, with a 7-0 UTEP run to start the game countered by six straight Bobcat points. The Miners picked things up a bit to lead by seven (19-12) after a lay-up by Milian. Ford fought to keep her squad in the game, and after a little flurry managed to pull Texas State to within three (21-18) with 9:35 to play in the period.

UTEP regrouped nicely, though, utilizing a 20-5 run to blow the game wide open. The Miners cruised into the locker room up by 14 (43-29), and were never seriously threatened in the second stanza. After Texas State's Krupa nailed a long three pointer the Miners countered with 10 successive points to lead 53-32 with 16:44 to play.

UTEP enjoyed an advantage of 20 points or more over the final 13 minutes, which included being up by at least 30 during the final 8:50 of the contest.

The Miners will not have long to rest on their laurels. They will play host to rival New Mexico at 6 p.m. MT on Monday. The game is part of a doubleheader, with the UTEP men's basketball team facing Stephen F. Austin at 8:30 p.m. that evening.
