EL PASO, TEXAS- The UTEP soccer team overwhelmed Lamar, 6-1, to open the Border Bash in dominant fashion at University Field Friday evening. Sophomore midfielder Tess Hall registered a hat trick to lead the onslaught for the Miners (6-1-0), with junior Katie Dorman (two goals and an assist) and sophomore Brittany Kindzierski (one goal) also getting in on the fun.
The Miners' fifth straight win improves them to 6-1-0 on the year, including 4-1-0 in the Sun City.
UTEP outshot the Lady Cardinals (2-5-0), 23-5, including 12-3 in shots on goal. The Miners also earned six corner kicks, while not permitting any for the visiting squad. The lone bright spot for LU came literally with one second to play in the match. Angie Guillory managed to sneak a shot past Sara Kaltwasser-who played the final 21 minutes of the game- to prevent the shutout.
The match was marred by chippy play, with the Lady Cardinals receiving four yellow cards (one team) to go along with a red card. Overall, Lamar committed 10 fouls.
The Miners came out of the gates with a flurry, garnering a pair of corner kicks within the first minute of the game. UTEP registered a pair of shots, but both were off the mark.
The constant pressure proved to be too much for the visitors in the fourth minute, with senior Anoop Josan deftly slicing a ball through the wind which landed at the foot of Hall. The sophomore corralled the pass and then drilled the shot past a helpless keeper to afford the Orange and Blue a 1-0 lead at 4:30.
UTEP continued to control after the strike, playing with poise even as things turned physical. Lamar was stricken with two yellow cards in an 11-minute span. The second foul and subsequent booking afforded the home side a free kick from just outside the area, and Hall would take advantage.
The native of Anaheim, Calif., skillfully curved the ball over the wall, and all the Lady Cardinal netminder could do was watch it blister into the back of the net. The tally put UTEP up, 2-0, at 18:04.
Despite being armed with the two-goal advantage, the Miners remained aggressive in their attack. Dorman vied for the third tally at the 33rd minute but this time LU GK Kylie Robinett was there for the save. Junior Jessie Pettit was knocking on the door four minutes later only to be turned away on a header.
A Lamar player was given her second yellow card of the match at 39:29, resulting in her being sent off. The Miners took full advantage of the extra player on the pitch, with only a leaping save by Robinett denying Dorman at 44:11.
The Orange and Blue initiated the second stanza much like they ended the first, dominating all facets of the match.
After some close calls, UTEP turned to Hall to spark the offense. She was more than content to deliver, touching home a thru ball to complete the hat-trick at 59:22.
Before the Lady Cardinals could even comprehend what happened, the Miners were lighting up the scoreboard for the fourth time of the tilt. This time it was courtesy of Dorman. Skye Schultz lobbed a long ball to Tori Martyn, whose shot clanked off the crossbar. Before LU could clear away the rebound, Dorman buried the loose change.
In the 68th minute it was Jade Babcock occupying the role of playmaker. In a mad scramble she managed to find Kindizierski who tapped it home for a team-leading seventh goal of 2010.
Dorman netted the Miners' sixth goal of the night when she made a brilliant run down the left wing in the 88th minute. She carried the ball all the way into the area before rocketing the shot into upper 90's country in a goal reminiscent of Landon Donovan at the 2010 World Cup.
Lamar managed to avoid being blanked after a high-lofted through ball bounced free to Guillory, who managed to slip the shot past Kaltwasser to beat the clock.
UTEP will look to maintain its winning ways when it challenges Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. at University Field Sunday.
