HOUSTON, TEXAS- The UTEP soccer team stormed out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back on the way to trouncing Houston Baptist, 5-1, on the road on Sunday. Sophomore Brittany Kindzierski powered the decisive six-minute stretch, scoring twice in a 59-second span (4:46 & 5:45) before assisting on Skye Schultz's tally at 10:57.
Kindzierski has now racked up a Conference USA-best-tying six goals on the year, including all four of the match-winning strikes for the Miners (4-1-0). Freshman Jade Babock (42:02) and junior Katie Dorman (51:18) also scored for UTEP, which dominated in all phases en route to picking up its third straight victory. Chandra Morden registered one stop in 45 minutes of action. Isla Cameron had the lone strike for the Huskies (1-4-0).
The Miners out-shot HBU 18-3, including holding a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. "We had a real good team effort," UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. "It was a really good weekend, and I'm proud of the team."
Dorman was credited with her team-leading third assist on the campaign on Kindzierski's first goal of the game. She rifled a shot in on net which was initially stopped by HBU netminder Lara Johnson. The ball bounced free, and Kindzierski buried the rebound into the empty net.
Before the Huskies could blink, Kindzierski sliced through their defense. She drilled a shot which twickled the twine to put UTEP up, 2-0, less than six minutes into the contest. With HBU tracking her every move, Kindzierksi took on the role of playmaker for Schultz's strike.
She raced up with the wing with the ball and then sent a cross to the 2009 C-USA Freshman of the Year, who re-directed the shot past a helpless Johnson for her first goal of 2010.
HBU tried to make a game of it, with Cameron's shot sneaking past a diving Morden at 29:23. UTEP quickly regained the momentum, thanks to Babcock. She rocketed a long shot on net which Johnson could not cleanly handle, and UTEP led 4-1 with just under three minutes to play in the period.
Never one to rest on its laurels, the Miners ensured there would be no threat of a comeback with Dorman scoring just six minutes into the second stanza. Off a free kick, freshman Azia Nicholson served a ball into the area which was headed home by Dorman. The service afforded Nicholson her initial collegiate point.
The Miners put it on cruise control down the stretch, and HBU could not even muster a shot on target. Junior GK Sara Kaltwasser played the second half in net for UTEP, but she was never tested.
UTEP will look to continue its winning ways when it plays host to North Dakota at 7 p.m. MT on Saturday.
